MANGALACHARAN:

Odissi dance starts with ‘Mangalacharan’ where the dancer enters the stage with flowers offering to the Lords. This is followed by a sloka and the trikhanda pranam. The sloka to be presented is Bhaje Brajeka Mandanam. In this beautiful sloka the leelas of Lord Krishna are depicted. The Brajpurlooks abandoned without Lord Krishna. This abhinaya depicts two major episodes. The one when Meera bai drank poison, Lord Krishna turned it into nectar. The second one is “Draupadi vastraharana”. When Draupadi was abashed in the Kurusabha, it was Lord Krishna who saved her honour by giving tons and tons of clothes. Krishna the epitome of love is always besides his bhaktas; his leela as vast as the ocean.

PALLAVI:

The word ‘pallavi’ is derived from the word Pallav which in Sanskrit means “newborn leaf” that is soft in nature. This is a pure dance piece where the dancer presents the unique body movements and steps of Odissi Dance. The item starts at a slow pace and gradually increases in its speed. This pallavi is set to raaga Saberi and taal ek taal.

Choregraphy: Padma Vibhusan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatro.

SRITAKAMALA:

Sritakamala is an abhinaya piece which is a blend of acting and pure dance. The song has been derived from Poet Jayadev’s book Geet Govinda which is a compilation of Sanskrit poems written by him in relation to Lord Krishna. This Abhinaya portrays the three episodes from Lord Krishna’s life. The first two stanzas are in the glory of Lord Krishna and talks about his radiant face that shines like a sun. The third stanza depicts the fight between Kaliya serpent and Lord Krishna. The fourth stanza is on how he defeated deamons Madhu, Mura and Naraka. The last and the fifth stanza present the fight between Ravana and Lord Ram and Ravana’s defeat. This abhinaya is set in taal tripata.

Choreography: Padma Vibhushan Guru KelucharanMohapatra.
